My back door will not shut properly
« on: January 11, 2006, 10:23:32 PM »
All of a sudden the past couple of months, my back door will not shut properly and therefore, will not lock.  I've had strong winds open the door and I've had to slam the blasted thing a few times when leaving for work to make the thing latch.

I live in a very old house and I'm used to things not fitting properly, and I'm shocked at this new development.  What could be making the door not shut all of a sudden?

And if there is something that is permanently going to keep my door from latching, what do I do to fix the problem?

Bootsie, you're in luck that you have 3 wonderful men on this forum who know their Handyman stuff.  There are some very Handywomen 'round here also, as well, too.

Tell us more about the door and the door jam.  Is it a wooden door?  Does it have a deadbolt?  If so, is the deadbolt on the door out of alignment ever so slightly with the deadbolt piece on the door frame or door jam?

I have a metal door and that out of alignment thing happened to me out of the blue.  I whipped out my hammer for a temporary fix.

Out of alignment?  When you slam it shut, do you have to lift it at all to close it?  Or do you just have to slam it into the deadbolt?

Give us more information.  I know nothing but can pretend pretty good.

I hear Will has a nice hammer.

OK, I'm not Mr. Handyguy with a hammer (where the hell is Twreck?) but usually that happens as a result of too much moisture swelling the wood in the door.  Or too little.  Take your pick.  I don't know where you live, so tell me, please, is there a large difference in humidity from Summer to Winter?

Yes, there is a lot of humidity in summer, not so much here in winter but it has been very rainy the past couple of months.
Boots, is it your inside door or the screen door, or is it both now?

The house is very old, the door is about 10 years old.  I have to slam, slam, slam it until it finally latches.  I tried to look to see if the alignment was off either right or left OR up or down and I couldn't really see.  I'm guessing, because of the slamming, that it isn't an up/down alignment problem.  I live in Central Indiana and it has been rather rainy, so humitidy may be the cause.  One thing that I should probably mention, about a week prior to this, I had a terrible time getting my key in the lock and turning it...had to wiggle it around till I could finally unlock the door.  That lasted a couple of days and then it appeared to magically 'fix' itself.

If swollen wood is the problem, is there a remedy?  I was afraid to mess with the hinges, could I do more harm than good by messing with them?  If it actually is the lockset, how hard are they to replace?

Dolly - The screen door broke and Erik literally ripped it off it's hinges and tossed it in the trash.  It is my inside door.

Damn!  Kim steals all the best lines.

If it is swollen wood (of the door variety), nothing much that I know of will help, except drying out.

BTW, the lock problem is also a symptom of swelling.

He's out handymanning.  I'll mention this thread to him when he comes home. I love talking about swollen wood, so it's no hardship.   :lolli:
