Issue - Computer Jumps Around

(1/5) > >>

Branch:
Marie, LindaLucy and GasLady have each mentioned that their "computer jumps around" and GasLady asks if there is a fix.  I am at a loss for what y'all are talking about.  I've not experienced a time when my computer "jumps around."  Can you give more details, please?

What type of computer do you use?  If it's a laptop, is your touchpad disabled?  What operating system do you use?  What browser do you use and what version of that browser?

I am not experiencing any problems with the site, most notably, not a "jumping" problem.  Is anyone else experiencing a "jumping" problem?  Those of you who are, can you please give me more details?

I have an HP desktop, HP laptop and HP netbook all with Windows 7, all using Microsoft Explorer.  When I am in the reply window (as I am now), anytime my response gets longer than the viewable window for the response (when the scroll bar on the right in the reply window should start scrolling down) I can continue typing, but the moment I stop typing the only visible part of my reply is the first part (I cannot see what I typed when it is on a line below the size of the "reply" window).  Every time I try to type, the window jumps back to the first few lines.  It's as if there is a giant rubber band on the "reply"" window, and it just keeps bouncing back up to the top lines.  I am deliberately rambling to make this reply long enough to cause the "jumping".  When I get to that point I will stop rambling, and then I can count the number of lines I can type before the jumping or rubber band action starts.  I have no idea if what I said will make any sense to you, but I'll be here for a while, so clonk me on the head if I can clarify anything.  The rest of this is just filler so I can get to the point of the jerking, jumping screen ... blah blah blah, alkdfja;ldkfjdjfadfjalflajfdjfdfjalfjajflajfafaj;ajfajldfjaljfajflajfkajflajlfja;fjafjajfdlajfajdfljalfj;afj;aljfajflajfajfajfjadfjafjlajflajdflajalfjaljfajfljaljfa;lfja;jfdkjfajdf;ajdfkajdfakjf;alkfjdjfa;ldjalkjdfd;adjf;ajdljfa;ljdflajf;ljaldkjfaljfd;lajdfa;djf;akjf;aljfa;ljf;ajfd;jf;ajdlfjdjaldjfalfj;aljfa;djalfjajf;aljdjfajdljaljdfaljdfajfaljf;adjfajf;aljf;aljkflajf;lajflajflajfla;jf;aljfa;ljdfljadlfjalfjaljflajflajfajf;lajfldjalsfj;aljf;aljf;alsjdflkdjfddlfkjadslfja;jasdfja;sjf;dlfj;aljdfljaflja;djf;ajf;dajljfjafljdaljsljflajd;jasldjf;laj;ljf;laj;aj;a;akdjfajdflajldfjldjfdjfldjflajfljfljlsdfjladjflajdflalfdjaljflajfljfaljflajflajflasjflajflasjflajsfjafljaljdfljdfljflajfljfljfljflajf;jfaljfkdj
Starting with this line, everytime I type my screen jumps back so this line is not visible.

I believe this is an IE browser issue.  I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser.

Check to see if you have "smooth scrolling" enabled, if so, uncheck the "smooth scrolling" box.

Open IE, select the "Tools" menu; select the "Advanced" tab; scroll down in the Advanced options menu to "Browser" options; scroll down in Browser options to "Use smooth scrolling", if the box is selected (checked), deselect it (remove the check).  Select "Apply"; select "OK" - hopefully, your jittery scrolling issue will be resolved.  :fc:

Update - I should have opened IE to test that suggestion before suggesting it cuz --- it doesn't work!  :taz:

Firefox does not have a vertical scroll bar in the reply window which is why I've not experienced this problem.  It appears to be a problem with IE not calculating the text box size as it fills up.  I'll have to look into something else to see how SMF can adapt to IE's calculation problem and its CSS overflow property.

It will have to be something that's investigated tomorrow since it's late here on the East Coast -weary eyes tend to make more and bigger mistakes; plus, I'll have to call John in for this one.

John:
Except, I have IE8 and upon testing, could NOT replicate the error, which is really bad with version 2 RC4 of the forum software.  This forum is using version 1.1.7 (I know, I know, I have GOT to update it someday).  On another forum I run, the version is 1.1.12 and it didn't happen there either.  And I have "Use smooth scrolling" enabled.

It's got to be some other combination of things, but is probably related to something in IE8.  I'll do the same tests from my home desktop, to see if I can validate one or the other result.

John:
Good news!  I can replicate the error.

Bad news!  I don't know how to fix it. (except to use Firefox)
